OceanaGold's Waihi mining operations are hard-rock gold and silver mines.
The Martha open pit has been operating since 1988. It is unique in New Zealand in that it is situated in a residential area, in close proximity to a thriving community; it is the subject of intense public interest. We are dedicated to maintaining operations in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Restraints and conditions have been placed on the operation that take into account the mine’s proximity to the town. These conditions include hours of work, permitted blasting times and permitted noise, dust and vibration levels.
The underground mines operate under some residential areas and like the Martha open pit, the consent conditions are stringent due to the operation’s proximity to residential properties.
Ore is treated at the processing plant, situated almost two kilometres from the open pit, beyond the town boundary. Water treatment and tailings storage facilities are also situated near the processing plant.
