Investing in Our Community
Waihi Gold operates a community investment programme that provides support for organisations, groups and projects in the Waihi region.
There are three tiers to our community support:
1. Regulatory projects
Projects that we are obliged to deliver due to regulation. These mostly relate to rehabilitation and decommissioning projects, planned with community involvement to meet community aspirations.
Example: The Cornish Pumphouse was relocated to a safe site and its surrounding area was enhanced and opened up to the public.
2. Legacy projects
Projects identified via Waihi Community Vision that meet our aims for leaving a sustainable legacy. These focus on reducing the effect of mine closure and support capacity building and partnership.
Examples: Waihi Gold aided the establishment of Vision Waihi Trust’s mine tour business by supplying and maintaining the minibus. The company constructed the Pit Rim Walkway which is used by local people and tourists.
3. Community donations and sponsorships
Example: Financial and in-kind assistance to local schools, clubs and organisations.
Typically projects that fall within Tiers 1 and 2 (outlined above) are long term, contractual and have substantial financial input. While Tiers 1 and 2 are very much a part of our overall community investment programme they are managed differently to Tier 3. Community donations and sponsorships are allocated monthly, usually in response to written requests. The monetary value of each donation or sponsorship in Tier 3 is usually up to $1,000.00.
